Your life is your message to the world./ Tu vida es tu mensaje al mundo

Recently I’ve started investigating the possibility to make a conservation strategy for one of my favorite animal, the wolf. But as I'm researching its situation in Spain I realize the complexity, human ignorance and stupidity that surround this topic... If I would be describing all the things the government does wrong concerning the management of this iconic animal, I’d still be writing tonight ... It's a shock to read official government documents, and realize that, besides the fact that it contains erroneous and insufficient data, the politicians, and not the scientists (who have much more knowledge! ) are those who decide about the future of this animal, and many others.

Which makes me propose the following questions: Why do we accept that a few politicians, who aren’t specialized in anything else than politics and economics, make decisions about our environment, our education, our future? Why are politicians all over the world tolerated to pursue their personal goals, and not what it is good for everyone? Why do we wait for the government to do things right whilst they have no idea about how the real world works outside the realm of pure politics?

“Your life is your message to the world. Make sure it’s inspiring”

I, for now, I will continue researching the topic of wolves in the hope that someday they can live without the threat of being exterminated by humans, in peace and in harmony with humanity. It isn’t a “great” message, but it’s a beginning. And I’m planning to do a lot for this marvelous world. It will be hard, there will be many opponents who don’t want a sustainable world because they would lose their power, but I’ll go on. I’ll go on, because it’s the only possibility I see for the future. We can’t stay still, waiting until “someone” stands up to fix what we did wrong. That “somebody” will never come, because that “somebody” is you. It’s time to take on responsibility that everyone has, not only of their own lives, but also of all the lives that surround us.

Nobody wants, or nobody dares?...

Ignorance is what makes us blind and creates fear. Thus, many beautiful animals suffer from human ignorance, as we immediately consider them "monstrous and evil" without even truly knowing them.

Y no sólo "plástico fresco", recientemente desechada.

The plastic sea

We naturally fear the seas and oceans for the animals that are its habitants; jellyfish, sharks, barracudas, stingrays etc.

But I have come to a realization; nature is no longer our greatest enemy.

Maybe this year I have observed better, maybe this year I have been swimming more often in various regions, but I’m shocked.

I’m shocked by the quantity of plastic in the sea. To be more specific as to what I have seen with my own eyes; the Mediterranean Sea. Every single time I have gone swimming in this great beautiful sea, I have encountered great quantities of plastic. And not only “fresh plastic”, recently thrown away. No, I am now seeing more and more often degraded particles of plastic. Particles of plastic which are easier and easier incorporated in the food chain of animals, including ours.

It greatly saddens me, to see that we are contaminating the oceans and seas to a point where we are affecting every single life form, and even putting ourselves in danger. Because honestly, plastic chemical particles is not what you want in your system, right?.

We have grown up in a world based on the concept of “use and throw away”. We have learnt incorrectly that, since the beginning of the plastic era, you use it, and then throw it away with any further need of concern. We believed that the nature, and in this case, the ocean was great enough to buffer our impact.

We were mistaken. What we do, what we thrown away or not, has direct effect on the ecosystems worldwide. Even plastics that you throw out of the car window, that gets shipped from the USA to India, that you throw on the ground eventually flows towards the oceans. And there it accumulates, degrades into tiny particles, but never fully disappears, forever poisoning life.

Thus, I ask you; Think before you do something. Think before you simply throw rubbish on the ground in the park or out of your car. Teach your children, and those who are no longer children but still act disrespectfully towards the nature. You might think “oh, it’s not my problem anymore from the moment it’s out of my sight”. Well, you’re mistaken. It is your problem. It is your responsibility. Your behavior of buying, using and throwing away is your responsibility. Unless we act NOW, one day the future generation will have to pay for your carelessness and ignorance.

So please, do this one thing for yourself; Stop throwing plastics into the nature. Recycle it, reuse it. But don’t let it flow away into the nature, where it will eventually poison all life forms.

No puedo.

Gracias

It's too late to be a pessimist

Today the conversation topic came up about the fact that the present environmental, social and political problems are so great and endless that it discourages people to do something about it. It’s really does seem so, that once you solve one global problem, another one arises. To which you have to add the difficulties that arise due to the multinationals and the governments, which in eyes of many are mainly interested in money and power, not in the wellbeing of all.

I must admit, it is discouraging sometimes, trying to make a better world. There are so many obstacles. Many people prefer remaining passive, others don’t even make an effort to listen to your cause, and the ones with power will crush you if you cross the line of their “laws”.

But I cannot remain sitting passively and hoping someone else will “save the world”. I can’t. Because I don’t think I would be able to die in peace one day, knowing I have not done my very best to make life better for all living beings around me. That’s how I am. And I do hope that others share this feeling, this passion for a better world, for all (not just the ones with power and money).

The truth is, if you just sit still and don’t put your effort in making a better world, many around you will copy this passive attitude. You cannot believe the illusion of “someone else/the government will fix this”. No. The change comes from each and every human. It comes from you. And if you are inspired and passionate enough, you can and will awaken the awareness of others, and that’s when your family, your community, your country will awaken and participate in change.

No one has ever managed to change something with passivity, ignorance or fear. And to be honest; we cannot afford to remain passive and let things get further out of control. Think of the next generations: Do you want to be remembered as someone who did nothing, or someone who did something good? Do you want to leave behind the beautiful legacy of our planet, or do you want the next generations to suffer and eventually perish?

To you is the choice. Don’t hide no longer behind the false safety of “someone else will do the hard work of changing the world”. You, dear human being, have the chance to choose what is right. Not just for you, but for all.

As a last note, I will add; it’s too late to be a pessimist. Because exactly that it what will paralyze you into passivity. Be passionate, and never stop trying your very best.

Thank you

Environmental Treaties... and their failure

One of my subjects in environmental studies is “Environmental Law”. I know, it sounds boring, but in reality it’s fascinating. It’s a good way to learn how the world works at political level, both national and international. Unfortunately until now I haven’t seen much good, and it’s all quite sad.

It’s a fact that we’re in an economic crisis, so governments are focusing on spending less and less money, meaning that all the things that have to do with the environment looses importance, and barely any money is invested in environmental projects.

Besides, most of the international treaties and protocols are not law-binding; they are merely recommendations. Thus many things concerning the environment a lot of countries agreed on in the past are now being ignored. Examples are the following;

The Convention on Biological Diversity is a treaty from 1992 signed by 153 countries, with the following goals; conservation of biological diversity; sustainable use of its components; and fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from genetic resources. It was about stopping biodiversity loss by the year 2010. All very well, but in all those years no country has actually taken solid measures to stop biodiversity loss, and now, in 2012, it continues increasing so rapidly that scientists call this a new mass-extinction period.

Another example is the Earth Summit 2002. It came 10 years after the first Earth summit in Rio, but its results were very disappointing; most of the compromises consisted in a very limited way to simply “support” international organizations who worked on sustainable development. The lack of financial investments has made it impossible to reach the goal once set to reduce to half by 2015 the amount of people who live on less than 1 dollar a day, who are starving and who have no access to drinkable water or sanitary services.

This is all very sad. Surely, I don’t like the lack of initiatives to reduce biodiversity loss, but the lack of initiatives to help combat poverty is truly a big mistake.  And there is an enormous lack of initiatives in every single aspect of sustainable development.

So, I really believe that governments are wrong in not investing in sustainable development. Their goal is; getting back to the economically thriving system that once worked well before the economic crisis.  But this is madness; you can’t try to go back to one system and once you’ve invested billions of dollars in it then you try to create a new system (that of sustainable development). This is the right moment to really focus on creating a global, sustainable system.

Besides, all the recent Earth Summits and treaties and conventions have all just been disappointing; none of them has really induced a change, and are mostly about “one day” we will start being sustainable in an economic, social and ecological way. Surely that “one day” will be when we have messed up everything so badly there is no future left for us and the next generations…

THIS is why I want to work at the United Nations; exactly for this reason; to prevent lack of initiatives, lack of interest, fear of changing a system that is rotten anyway. I want to see a change in the world, for better. Not for me, but all those who come after me. We are so selfish, only thinking about short term solutions that just put us deeper and deeper in trouble, instead of thinking what is right for all living beings and the Earth, and in terms of many, many generations.

We need change. To hold onto old beliefs and systems is to avoid growth and wisdom. We should not fear change, not if it means a better future for all.

This is what I believe, dear people. Thank you for reading, and if you are interested in some of the famous treaties and conventions;

FLOW: for the love of water

Interesting documentaries about the environment II

Today I am continuing with what I wrote quite a while ago: documentaries about the environment. Again I will present 3 documentaries, with links to their websites and to a website where you can watch them online.

The 11th hour

The expression “the eleventh hour” means the last moment when change can happen to avert possible disaster. In the film The 11th Hour a variety of world experts explore how humanity has arrived at the current convergence of environmental crises while exploring steps that people can take to avert global disaster. In summary, the earth is nearing meltdown, beyond climate change. The process began with the Industrial Revolution, when people started mistakenly looking on nature as external to themselves and exploitable without limits. Forests have undergone major destruction. The ocean is becoming stagnant. Almost everywhere, the soil itself is largely damaged. In addition, 50,000 species a year are becoming extinct; no ecosystem can be identified as improving.

Humans suffer from increasing numbers of diseases caused by pollution. At fault is the overproduction of non-sustainable manufactures, immense waste and destruction, and an unsupportable population. The primary cause for much of the crisis is the fuels we use, petroleum being the primary one.

Through nature itself, the technology exists to solve some of these crises, and part of the solution is for people to live more consciously in harmony with nature as opposed to dominating it. According to the film, in a few years we will have reached the point of no return. We are not only at the eleventh hour, but at the last few seconds of that hour. Within this century, if nothing effective is achieved, planetary damage will be dramatic and total in every area. Although impossible to predict, extreme disaster could be quick once the balance is decisively tipped in the wrong direction, and it will happen everywhere.

The 11th Hour features leading experts from around the world, including former Soviet Prime Minister Mikhail Gorbachev, scientist Stephen Hawking, former head of the CIA James Woolsey, and sustainable design experts William McDonough and Bruce Mau, along with over 50 other scientists and world leaders who discuss the most important environmental issues facing the earth while presenting strategies to avert the crisis.

Home

The documentary chronicles the present day state of the Earth, its climate and how we as the dominant species have long-term repercussions on its future. A theme expressed throughout the documentary is that of linkage—how all organisms and the Earth are linked in a "delicate but crucial" natural balance with each other, and how no organism can be self-sufficient.

The first 15 minutes include footage of the beginning of the natural world, starting with single-celled algae developing at the edges of volcanic springs. By showing algae's essential role in the evolution of photosynthesis, it also explores the innumerable species of plants which all have their origins in this one-celled life form.

In the rest of the first hour of the film, the documentary takes on a more human-oriented focus, showing the agricultural revolution and its impacts, before moving on to talk about the harnessing of oil, leading to fire, industry, cities and inequality gaps like never before. It portrays the current predicament regarding cattle ranches, deforestation, food and water shortages, the use of non-renewable "fossil water", the over-quarrying crisis and the shortage of energy, namely electricity. Cities such as New York City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Mumbai, Tokyo and Dubai are used as examples of the mismanagement and wastage of energy, water and food. The recession of marshlands and glaciers are shown in vast aerial shots of Antarctica, The North Pole and Africa, while mass emigration and refugee counts are shown currently and forecast in the event that these events remains unchanged.

It is at this point that the film begins to focus on global warming and the carbon crisis. Home shows how melting glaciers, rising sea levels and changing weather patterns are ravaging the people who have least to do with climate change, but also how it soon will affect rich populous areas.

The documentary claims to show the awful truths regarding our impact on the Earth, but also what we are now doing to combat and reverse it: including renewable energy, the creation of more and more national parks, international co-operation between various nations on environmental issues and the extra education and reform being had across the globe in response to the current problems facing the earth.

FLOW: for love of water

Water is the essence of life, sustaining every being on this planet. Without water, there would simply be no plants, no animals, and no people. But the global water supply isn't just at risk, it's already in crisis.

With an unflinching focus on politics, pollution and human rights, FLOW: For Love of Water ensures that the precarious relationship between humanity and water can no longer be ignored. While specifics of locality and issue may differ, the message is the same; water, and our future as a species, is quickly drying up. Armed with a thirst for survival, people around the world are fighting for their birthright; unless we change, we face a world in which only those that can pay for their water will survive. FLOW: For Love of Water is a catalyst for people everywhere: the time has come to turn the tide and we can't wait any longer.

Interviews with scientists and activists intelligently reveal the rapidly building crisis, at both the global and human scale, and the film introduces many of the governmental and corporate culprits behind the water grab, while begging the question “CAN ANYONE REALLY OWN WATER?”

Beyond identifying the problem, FLOW also gives viewers a look at the people and institutions providing practical solutions to the water crisis and those developing new technologies, which are fast becoming blueprints for a successful global and economic turnaround.

i'm back! /¡He vuelto... a escribir!!

Well, it’s been quite some time since I have written here on this blog. In the meanwhile, I have made another blog (http://writingsaboutlife.blogspot.com/) , written some texts there. I have learnt more about life, I have traveled more, seen more, thought more about things. And maybe the most important thing; I have started studying environmental sciences at the university. Which is a great thing considering my love/interest for nature, the environment, and its relations with society, economy and politics. Well, of course, I’ll be quite busy the following years with this study, but in the meanwhile I’m learning a lot of things, which with the passing of days give me more and more insight about how this great complex world works.

I haven’t written or such a long time mainly because I didn’t have any time, but also because I didn’t have any inspiration and I didn’t know how to continue the series I had planned about interesting documentaries about the environment. I have decided that for the moment I will mainly write about the things that I am learning. If my posts seem a bit incoherent and they lack a neat order, then forgive me dear reader.

Well. Written all this, I hope I will finally start writing here again! because to be honest, there is enough to write about the environment for a looooooong time ;)
Greetings! :)

Mientras tanto, he hecho otro blog (http://writingsaboutlife.blogspot.com/), he escrito algunos textos allí.

Saludos! :)

The chemicals used in daily life/ Los químicos utilizados en nuestro vida diaria

Especially in the last few decades the use of chemicals has grown exponentially in almost every aspect of our lives. Chemicals are used in food, pharmaceutics, cosmetics, in our daily objects we use.
A great deal of those chemicals is based on petroleum.

Sure, chemicals and petroleum derivates have made our lives a lot easier. But has it also made it healthier? Because surely you value health too, don’t you?

Let me give you a couple of examples about the uses of chemicals and petroleum derivates in our daily lives:

Since the green revolution, we have turned to monoculture, which has had as consequence the appearance of pests. Human response to that has been to fabricate pesticides out of chemicals. And if that is not enough, they also designed herbicides. But of course, so much poison also ended with the plants that the farmers did want to keep. So what was their next step? Genetic engineering, creating GM plants, which then are literally soaked in pesticides and herbicides and even so survive such throughout intoxication. But the fact that they survive it, doesn’t mean much good. Because all the toxins pass into the plant: into the roots, into the branches and leaves, into every part of the plant from which we will eat. In short; we are eating toxic products.

But of course, that is only just the beginning of the story: because what do you believe happens to the animals? Have you ever seen the places where livestock is held? Dusty, dry, ugly planes covered with thousands of animals; a perfect place for microorganisms to thrive. Something that the farmers are not happy about at all... So what is their great strategy against diseases? Give enormous amounts of antibiotics and other medicines to the poor animals. And guess what? Even more chemical substances are given to them to ensure a rapid growth. Hurrah. More chemicals that pass into the soil, air, water. And into us too.

Next example; the cosmetic industry. If you have ever taken a look at the ingredients of your cosmetic products, then you will surely agree with me that most sound like an extraterrestrial language. In fact, most of those complicated-sounding ingredients are chemicals, from which a lot are derivates from petroleum. If you knew what all those ingredients were, if you knew how much harm they do in just slighter higher levels, would you ever put all that rubbish on yourself? I surely wouldn’t. The skin is the biggest organ of the body, and it has a great capacity to absorb about everything you put onto it. in that way, all the chemicals in the cosmetics that you are putting on yourself, pass through the skin, into the body’s system, and trust me, that’s not healthy at all.

This is all sounding a bit depressing right? Thinking about how much we are surrounded by human made poison… still, the story hasn’t ended yet. There is another factor, so contaminated nowadays, but without which we cannot survive: water. The hydrosphere is where eventually all the contaminants go to from all kinds of sources; agriculture, farms, the cosmetic sector, the industry… and even though water is cleaned in water cleaning stations, the water that comes out of the tap often still has slight amounts of chemical substances which are simply to small to be filtered out of the water.

But please, dear reader, don’t despair. This is all sounding pretty bad, but fortunately nowadays more and more people are becoming more conscious about all these things. If you didn’t know all of this before reading, then now you know. I’m not trying to scare you with all these facts. No. what I am trying to do is make people more conscious about the choices they make, because my goal is that everyone is healthy, happy and living in harmony with nature.  Happily, there are more people like me, and together we are trying to bring together all kinds of products that are made in an ecologic, traditional way, in order to respect the planet and, of course, to take better care of you.
